This is a question that everyone asks themselves at some point in their life. Be it the fresh graduate who is now taking their first steps into the working world or the already seasoned individual who did some time to work with a company and is now looking to change careers.

Before we jump into finding out what career is right for you, it is crucial that you have a clear understanding of what a career is. If you type “what is a career” in Google, you’ll get this answer which I’m am particularly fond of. “A career is an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life and with opportunities for progress.” This definition completely outlines what to expect along the way. The two main points are:

  1. A career is an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life.

The first point states that you will be spending a significant portion of your life in a specific occupation. That being said, it is understood that whatever occupation that may be, it should be something that you are both interested in and also comfortable with doing for years to come, otherwise, it’s just self-torture that will make you miserable day after day, year after year.

The second point states that careers come with opportunities for growth. This is the important part that outlines the difference between a job and a career. According to, a job is simply something you do to earn money. Career advancement is not something you’re interested in there and the work often doesn’t interest you at all. In five years, you’ll likely not be doing anything like your current job. A career, on the other hand, is a series of connected employment opportunities, where you build up skills at earlier employment opportunities to move you into higher paying and higher prestige employment opportunities later on. In five years, you’re planning to be doing something very similar to what you’re doing now, but hopefully with more income and more interesting problems to tackle.

In a career, your goal is to not just complete the tasks at hand but to also learn additional skills, gain experiences, build your network and make yourself stand out among your co-workers for promotions, raises, and possibly similar positions in other organizations. This requires you to do more than just completing your everyday tasks. In other words, you should be looking for ways in which you can get promotions and raises and bonuses whenever possible while improving your resume-building skills and experience. This means that you should be always going the extra mile and doing tasks that are beyond your minimum job description, building positive relationships with your co-workers, be the first one at work and the last to leave, and so on.

You should make every effort to improve your standings for a career until you get to the level of success that you want. Bear in mind that this doesn’t mean you should neglect the other important pieces of your life like family and spiritual growth. It simply means that you should establish a professional goal, or a blueprint if you will, that outlines what you have to do to get there.

The Internal Clarification process is broken down into three points.

  1. Who I Am? –When making a career decision, it is important to understand who you are. Your strengths, weaknesses, desires, abilities, personality, and assets. It is recommended that you start with self-reflection to determine what is most important to you. By realizing and understanding these important aspects about yourself, you will gain deeper and clearer insights into who you are and be able to make better career decisions.
  2. External Factors – External factors that may influence your career direction. For example, they may include family, partners, friends; as well as financial situations, or life roles.
  3. Career Curiosities – Career Curiosities refers to your career ideas. They can be specific occupations such as Television and Radio Reporter; activities such as working with children; or pursuing a further education program.

Inspired Exploration refers to a process of exploring the world around you in order to clarify your career direction. This may include assessing your thoughts and feelings in relation to career decision making, as well as exploring opportunities around you.
